Bishopric Chrism Mass

Yesterday Bishop Paul, the Clergy and the laity of the Bishopric gathered for the Mass of Chrism at the Cathedral of St Michael and St George in Aldershot. This is the Mass at which the oil of the Sick, the Oil of Catechumens and the Oil of Chrism are blessed and consecrated for the coming year by the Bishop. The blessing of oil is a very ancient liturgy with documented evidence from the fourth century, but it is certainly of earlier origin. The Mass also includes the renewal of priestly commitments that priests make every year. Traditionally the Mass of Chrism takes place in Holy Week but due to the nature of the Bishopric the Mass usually takes place before so that it is possible to gather all the clergy and laity from all  three services together at the Military Cathedral in Aldershot. As with  other dioceses the Mass of Chrism is a great opportunity for the Bishopric is to come together as one and as a reminder of our mission to serve the Catholic Community in the Forces.
