Armed Forces Retreat - Ampleforth Abbey
11th-14th November 2024
Armistice Day 2024, 110 years since the beginning of the First World War; a sobering day for many in our line of work but for 14 personnel representing RN, Army, RAF, Civil Servant and spouses it meant the beginning of the Bishopric of the Forces Retreat held at Ampleforth Abbey, North Yorkshire. The Benedictine community at Ampleforth are renowned for their hospitality and with a purpose made Retreat Centre (The Grange) equipped with a chapel, kitchen, seminar spaces and a constant supply of sugary treats we knew were going to be well hosted. Fr Richard (and old Amplefordian pupil) was our lead for the Retreat and after some housekeeping points and introductions we were welcomed at Vespers. The Benedictine community at Ampleforth sing this in Latin and the beauty of the prayers and music really grounded all and allowed us to reflect on our intent whilst on Retreat. Supper followed, an opportunity to get to know each other before Compline again inside the Abbey and then back to the peace of our accommodation.
For those wanting to join in all the Liturgy of the Hours it was an early start with Matins starting promptly at 0600 followed by Lauds at 0730, breakfast at 0800 and Mass at 0900. The first session with Fr Richard followed where we explored faith (especially in modern times and in our military construct) and what is meant by trust and hope. Coffee and then Sext (Midday Prayers) followed before lunch and the opportunity for individual led activity. Some personnel took the chance to walk through the beautiful valley to the lakes, others went for a run, and some took to their book and enjoyed the opportunity to quietly reflect. The evening then commenced with Vespers followed by supper and Compline again.
Wednesday and Thursday followed a similar timetable, though with numbers dwindling at Matins as the days progressed. Many took the opportunity to visit the Ampleforth Tea Rooms and Visitors Centre which laid out the history of both the Abbey and the school, others took their Rosary to the Marian Gardens overlooking the valley. Fr Richard offered slots for all for reconciliation or a one-to-one conversation which many took up before departing after lunch on the Thursday.
Having the opportunity to take a step away from our busy lives (both personal and professional) and focus on our connection with God was very special and allowed many of us to reset ourselves spiritually. The hospitality at Ampleforth was incredible and on behalf of all who attended I would like to thank them. Personally, I will certainly go again and look to the next opportunity eagerly.
